Hot Water Boilers:
Hot water boilers use water as the heat transfer medium to heat your home or business. They do not actually "boil" water at all. Their namesake came from the earlier steam boiler (see below) that did actually boil water to produce steam. The hot water boiler system utilizes circulator pumps to circulate hot water ranging from 120 to 210 degrees Fahrenheit through piping to baseboards, convectors, radiators and hydro coils. Hot water boilers can also be used for radiant in floor heating, snow melting applications, and potable (drinking) hot water heating. Boilers utilize tank-less coils and indirect hot water tanks (see water heater section) to heat potable water. Hot water boilers provide many benefits over its predecessor, the steam boiler, including variable temperature capability. Heating the water only to a temperature needed to adequately heat a space depending on outdoor temperature drastically increasing efficiency. They are also easier to zone, install, and have lower stand by losses due to having lower operating temperatures. Steam boilers use steam as the heat transfer medium to heat your home or business. The steam boiler, unlike its successor the hot water boiler, does in fact boil water into steam that is then conveyed through piping to radiators, convectors, or steam coils. Steam boilers in the United States date back to 1841 when the first heating contractors Joseph Nason and James Jones Walworth got the idea to start installing steam boilers in peoples' homes. They are no longer installed in new homes but many systems are still operating effectively hundreds of years later. Steam boilers require in depth understanding to be replaced and serviced properly. As much a part of American history as the motor car, steam boilers changed the way homes and business were heated and laid the foundation for modern heating. Forced Air Furnaces:
Forced air furnaces use air as the heat transfer medium to heat your home or business. The forced air furnace is the most commonly installed heating system in the United States. These systems use ductwork, plenums, and vents to distribute the heated air through out a space. The forced air furnace utilizes a blower motor and wheel to "force" air through the supply ductwork and to pull air back through the return ductwork. The "return" ductwork conveys air back to the furnace to be heated and the "supply" ductwork conveys the heated air to the space. Vents also known as registers, diffusers and grilles connect to the supply and return duct trunks through smaller ductwork called take offs. Supply vents are typically located on the perimeter outside walls and return vents are typically located either centrally or on interior walls. Forced air furnaces have filters located on the return side off the system that need to be changed regularly for proper operation. A heat pump by definition is a device that transfers heat from a colder area to a hotter area by using mechanical energy, such as an air conditioner. The HVAC term "heat pump" generally refers to a HVAC device that is used for space heating. When a heat pump is used in heat mode, it utilizes the same basic refrigeration circuit used by an air conditioner, but the refrigerant flow is in the opposite direction. The heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air, the ground (geothermal), or water sources such as ground water or ponds and transfers it into the space to be conditioned. Heat pumps can not absorb endless amounts of heat however. With air source heat pumps the outdoor temperature can drop low enough that the heat transfer is not adequate to maintain the conditioned space temperature. This is called the "balance point" and is when the back up heat source is called on to heat the space. Heat pumps are three to four times more efficient in their use of electric power than standard electrical resistance heaters. Electric furnaces or air handling units operate similarly to forced air furnaces (see section above). Instead of utilizing fossil fuel and a heat exchanger system these furnaces utilize electric resistance strip heaters to produce heat. The electric furnaces "strip heaters" are typically a back up heating source used in conjunction with a heat pump system. Electric furnaces can be expensive to operate but do have advantages over their fossil fuel counterparts. Electric furnaces do not produce combustion gases that need to be vented to the outdoors therefore don't require a chimney or exhaust piping systems. Allowing these furnaces to be installed in locations that fossil fuel furnace installation would not be possible.
Commercial packaged units commonly referred to as rooftop units are generally installed on flat commercial roof tops. Packaged units have both A/c and heating systems in one product. The heating system is typically an electric, gas, or propane (LP) forced air furnace that utilizes a blower motor and wheel most often with a belt and pulley drive system to transfer air through attached ductwork.
